Volunteer Positions
Our incredible volunteer community empowers students to thrive in college and dream boldly about their futures — not just what’s possible, but what’s next.
Mentors
Volunteer as a mentor by building a consistent, supportive relationship with a student over the course of the program. Mentors guide students through academic challenges, college exploration, and personal growth, offering encouragement, accountability, and perspective. This role is ideal for individuals who are committed to showing up regularly, building trust, and helping students navigate the path to and through college. This includes building a strong, trusting, empathetic relationship with their mentors. Our mentors serve as positive role models and catalysts for the students, encouraging them to fulfill their full potential.
What We Look For
A commitment of at least one year with MMBay (three years strongly preferred)
Consistent preparation and attendance to 80% of all scheduled Saturday sessions
Responsiveness to mentees outside of sessions as needed, including timely replies to texts or emails and proactive check-ins as needed
The ability to build genuine rapport and trust with individuals across a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and ages
A willingness to learn, listen, and collaborate within a team-oriented environment
The ability to set ambitious but attainable goals that challenge and support mentee growth
Strong organizational habits and clear, reliable communication practices
Prior experience mentoring or coaching first-generation, low-income, or otherwise underrepresented youth is a plus, though not required
Instructors
The instructional component of our programs is designed to equip students with the knowledge and critical thinking skills needed for success in school and on standardized tests. Our instructors serve as both guides and role models, helping students deepen their understanding while building confidence and a genuine engagement with learning.
Instructors contribute in a range of ways, including leading small-group instruction (typically 3–4 students), supporting SAT/ACT preparation, and developing and facilitating workshops on close reading, critical thinking, and personal statement writing. We work closely with each instructor to align responsibilities with their strengths and experience.
What We Look For
A commitment of at least one year with MMBay (two years preferred)
Consistent preparation and attendance to 80% of all scheduled Saturday sessions
Strong presentation and facilitation skills in small-group and/or classroom settings
Depth of knowledge in a particular academic subject, paired with enthusiasm for teaching it
The ability to break down complex concepts in ways that are clear, accessible, and engaging
Intellectual curiosity, especially in how students learn and how academic skills are developed
A results-oriented mindset, with a focus on setting and achieving meaningful goals
The ability to collaborate effectively and navigate ambiguity with professionalism
Prior experience designing curriculum or instructional materials is a plus, though not required

Saturday Session Leadership Roles
Session Operations & Community Engagement
We are seeking a small team of 3-4 highly organized and proactive volunteers to support the day-to-day operations of the program while helping to build a strong, connected community. This team will coordinate logistics for our Bright Minds Lunch program, support program execution, and ensure a seamless experience for students and volunteers. In addition, they will lead team building and engagement efforts, contributing to a positive, collaborative, and high-functioning program culture.
Mentoring Leads & Instruction Leads
Mentoring Leads and Instruction Leads are responsible for driving the quality and consistency of the program experience for their respective grade levels. These are key leadership roles with a direct impact on student outcomes and overall program execution.
Mentoring Leads guide the implementation of the mentoring curriculum, ensuring sessions are delivered effectively and that students are progressing along key developmental milestones.
Instruction Leads oversee the instructional program, support and manage instructors, and ensure strong delivery of academic content aligned to our three-year model.
MMBay provides a comprehensive, plug-and-play curriculum for both mentoring and instruction. Leads are responsible for ensuring this curriculum is executed with fidelity, adapted as needed to meet student needs, and delivered at a high level of quality and engagement.
Leads also participate in regular check-ins focused on progress, quality, and student engagement, and are expected to maintain strong communication and accountability across their teams.
Given the scope and importance of these roles, both Mentoring Leads and Instruction Leads are expected to commit to at least two years with MMBay.
Pod Leaders
Each mentee class is organized into Pods of approximately 8–10 students and their mentors. Pod Leaders partner to guide their Pod through mentoring sessions, facilitate discussions, and support both mentors and mentees in staying aligned and engaged.
Pod Leaders implement mentoring session plans provided by the Mentoring Leads and play a key role in creating a consistent, high-quality experience for their Pod.
Pod Leaders are strongly encouraged to commit to at least two years with MMBay to ensure continuity and depth of impact.
These roles are designed to provide targeted support at key moments in a student’s journey. They do not require consistent attendance at weekly Saturday sessions, although regular attendance is required. Volunteers will receive a clear calendar outlining any sessions where participation is needed.
These are critical roles that directly support students in reaching important milestones. We strongly prefer individuals with prior experience in the relevant subject areas, and we are committed to training the right candidates who bring the interest and dedication to excel.
