FAQ: Do I Really Need a Cover Letter?!

Long story, short: yes! Because people have heard that resumes are only given about 6 seconds to skim through, some may question how useful attaching a cover letter along with the resume is. However, you don’t want to underestimate the power of a cover letter—it truly is a great opportunity to distinguish yourself from a competing applicant.

Q: Ok, Where Do I Start?

A: First, research! Learn everything you can about the company, from its mission statement, to their most impressive products on the market, to even reading articles that have highlighted them (around their successes as well as their challenges). Reading about the company beyond the job description can help you develop a better connection to the role as you begin to write.

Then, start creating an outline using the job description as the template. Another method is to create a Venn diagram for each job application: Job Description in one circle, your experience in the other, and start dragging the commonalities between the two to the center as they apply to one another. Q: What Are Some Must-Haves in a Cover Letter?

A: There are a few things that cover letters generally have (such as a strong opening statement, or including a personal connection), but some must-haves are: 1.) Sharing an achievement that addresses a challenge that exists for the employer/industry, and 2.) showing passion for the cause and enthusiasm for the role. While a resume is supposed to be a list of your accomplishments, it’s important to use the cover letter to write out exactly why you want the position, before you can further convey that in your interview.

Q: Do I Really Need to Write One for Each Job That I Apply To?

A: Yes, if you’re serious about applying! The job market is competitive out there, but attaching a cover letter with your resume can add a personal touch that’ll help hiring managers decide between you and another applicant. Make sure to avoid being generic with each cover letter as well - this is supposed to be a direct letter to the hiring manager of matching your skills with what they're looking for.

Q: How Long Does It Need to Be?

A: Like a resume, it’s important to keep this document concise too. Generally, ½ page–1 page should be sufficient to convey your qualities and relevant experience.

Here are some examples of cover letters, in case you want to take a look at some to compare!
