Becoming a Volunteer Mentor or Instructor
If you're passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people and eager to empower the next generation, consider volunteering as a Mentor or Instructor at Minds Matter Bay Area. Through these roles, you can play a pivotal part in shaping the future of students from low-income families in the San Francisco Bay Area.
At MMBay, volunteers typically start as Mentors or Instructors.
As a Mentor, you'll have the privilege of building a strong relationship with a student, guiding them through their educational journey. By being present, prepared, and accessible, you become a positive role model, offering guidance, support, and empathy. Through weekly sessions and regular communication, you provide a safe space for your mentee to explore aspirations, set goals, and navigate challenges. Your mentorship goes beyond academics, fostering personal development and empowering them to overcome obstacles. Committing to at least one year (preferably three) ensures consistent support and inspiration.
Instructors at MMBay equip students with knowledge and critical thinking skills. Whether teaching a class, SAT/ACT preparation, or essential skills workshops, you bring passion and expertise to the classroom. You simplify complex concepts, make learning engaging, and inspire students to deepen their knowledge. By committing to at least one year, being prepared, and offering support, you contribute to students' academic growth in a collaborative environment.
Joining our Leadership Team at MMBay Area
Minds Matter Bay Area offers exceptional leadership positions for passionate individuals who aspire to work with larger groups of mentees and volunteers. In these roles, you can elevate your volunteer journey and become a guiding force, actively shaping the future of our organization.
We currently have three available leadership positions: Pod Leaders, Mentoring Leads, and Instruction Leads.
As a Pod Leader, you'll play a pivotal role in overseeing a Pod consisting of approximately eight students and their mentors. Collaborating with another Pod Leader, you'll facilitate mentoring session activities, lead discussions, and provide support to mentor-mentee pairs. Your leadership will foster a collaborative and inclusive environment, ensuring the success of each session. With the mentoring session curriculum provided by the Mentoring Leads, you'll ensure program objectives are met and every student thrives. We expect a minimum commitment of two years with MMBay to establish continuity and build strong relationships.
If you have a passion for curriculum development and management, the roles of Mentoring Lead or Instruction Lead might be a perfect match. As a Mentoring Lead, you'll create, manage, and guide the mentoring curriculum for your assigned class. Similarly, as an Instruction Lead, you'll manage a team of Instructors and oversee the instructional curriculum for a specific grade level. These positions are instrumental in shaping our students' educational experience, delivering engaging and impactful lessons. With access to a collection of aligned lesson plans, you'll curate resources and provide support to Pod Leaders and Instructors during each session. We require a minimum commitment of two years with MMBay to ensure stability and expertise in these roles.
At MMBay, commitment is the bedrock of our program. We highly value your presence, proactive communication, and dedication to building trust with our students. As a member of the Leadership Team, you'll be expected to commit a minimum of 2-3 in-person hours per week. Our Saturday sessions, running from August to May, require a minimum attendance of 80%, with advance notice for any absences. We recognize the significance of establishing strong relationships with students, thus a full year of commitment, preferably three, is required to ensure their success.
