Summer at UCLA: Xiomara
Xiomara Gudiel is a current high school junior and second-year Minds Matter mentee. She spent her first summer program at the Design Media Arts program at UCLA. For two weeks, summer program students live on campus and take 4 classes a day. Her classes included graphic design, web design, audio/video, and gaming, and she earned 4 units of UC credit.

New Year, New Beginnings
The members of Minds Matter of San Francisco’s graduating class of 2013 have all gone off to college! And along with last year’s senior class, some notable players on the executive team have also graduated.

A Tale of Transformation
Returning third-year mentee, Annie He, toyed with her scarf diffidently before offering up a sincere smile. When asked about her Minds Matter experience, Annie took a moment to collect her thoughts. And with an unassuming but audible inhale, along with a fleeting glance at her mentors for silent support, she launched into her story.

Confessions of a First-Year Mentor
The first time I met my mentee, Ronald, he had a cream cheese mustache: residue from his morning bagel. And when I pointed it out, and he just grinned with only a faint trace of embarrassment, I knew we’d get along. My co-mentor, Alex Grant, had been mentoring Ronald for a year already, yet it didn’t feel strange joining the already-close duo.

Back to School: Meeting the Mentees
It was an early Saturday morning for the 33 high school students on September 22, 2012: the first Minds Matter session of the new school year. The wide-eyed mentees seemed reinvigorated after eventful summer college programs and were ready to be introduced to or reunited with their co-mentors.
